When important questions are avoided

Some questions are easy to ask in a family business. Othersโ€ฆ not so much. Questions like:
๐Ÿ’กWho should lead next?
๐Ÿ’กWhat happens if someone wants to exit?
๐Ÿ’กAre we still aligned on why we own this business together?

And often, more practical ones that sit just below the surface:
โ“What are the biggest risks facing the business โ€” and are we aligned on them?
โ“Are there aspects of our governance that need to change?
โ“How should disagreements actually be handled?
โ“What do different family members want to learn more about, or be involved in?

In my experience, these questions arenโ€™t avoided because families donโ€™t care. Theyโ€™re avoided because people donโ€™t want to create tension, say the wrong thing, or open something they canโ€™t easily close.

Thatโ€™s where structure really helps.

One approach Iโ€™ve found effective is using carefully designed surveys to ask the questions that are often left unspoken. Done well, they give every family member a voice โ€” including those who may not feel comfortable speaking up in a group setting. From there, individual conversations and facilitated discussions can build on those responses in a way that feels safe, balanced and constructive.

Itโ€™s not about forcing difficult conversations.โ€จItโ€™s about creating the right environment for them to happen โ€” in a way that respects both the family and the business.

Some families can manage this themselves. But for others, having an independent facilitator can make the difference between avoiding the issuesโ€ฆ and working through them productively.
